Clipper ships were used to carry passengers and goods, migrants to the USA or between coasts and to Australia, notably for the wool trade, and wheat and other goods back to the UK. In July 1883, Cutty Sark was one of the fastest wool carriers, beating every ship sailing by 25 days to over a month on the UK to Australia route.
