CHINA SURFACE WARSHIPS: 2019 - 2020
Color photos of active Chinese PLA Navy Surface Warships
Major Update in March 2023 to add a number of new ships and made corrections. Note that ships are listed by hull number and not by class. Also note that Type 056A ships have been renumbered and are listed by the original number and new number. A number of Type 056 (22) have been transferred to the Coast Guard.
Tried to locate photographs or plans for the CV-19 (Type 004) aircraft carrier which is under construction, with no luck. Same goes for CVN-20 and CVN-21 (Type 005). So those are based on RUMINT.
NOTE that the Type 005 aircraft carrier deck elevators may (probably) be able to lift two (2) aircraft each simultaneously if the lifts are not square, but angled outward (trapezoid).
In 2019 it was announced that China's PLA Navy now has more ships than the U.S. Navy. This book covers the bulk of Beijing's Navy including destroyers, frigates, corvettes and amphibious landing ships. These categories have seen significant growth since 2019. The rapid growth of ships is in keeping with the Military Strategy China released in 2015 which states, "... the PLA Navy (PLAN) will gradually shift its focus from "offshore waters defense" to the combination of "offshore waters defense" with "open seas protection," and build a combined, multi-functional and efficient marine combat force structure." The launching of new ships is in addition to retiring very old ships (pre-1990) and modernizing ships built after that.
U.S. Navy ships are larger, and the U.S. has more aircraft carriers - China has one active (CV-16), one being repaired (CV-17) and 2 (or 3) being built. We added China's aircraft carriers tho there is precious little information out there. It does appear that CV-19 will be nuclear powered and include lasers and rail guns as defensive weapons.
This book does not go into the ships of the Coast Guard, the PLA Navy Reserve Force, the People's Armed Police (PAP) or the China Militia (¿¿¿). Let us know if we should print these by logging into our web site and sending a comment at USGOVPUB.COM
