In 1843 Balmes founded the magazine La Sociedad, in which he published articles on the social, political, and religious issues of his time. La Sociedad was reprinted in Barcelona in 1851. In its pages were the many "Cartas a un esc ptico," in which, as its title announces, reflects on religion and its validity in 19th century Spain.
