A great western novel of action and courage after Texas wins independence. Sam Houston needs a strong man to lead settlers to northern Texas. They establish a settlement along the banks of the Bosque River to help stop the depredations of the roving warlike Comanche. President Houston summons Luther Brant, Sergeant of the Rangers, to build a trading post and fort at the base of Chalk Mountain. Many obstacles stand in Brant's way as he faces Santa Anna's right hand man, Colonel Vaca and his Mexican Cavalry. Also, the wily and hostile war chief of the Penateka Comanche, Buffalo Hump, oppose the settlement of north Texas. Who will win this final battle for the Republic of Texas?
