Anna Sewell's 'Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse' was written at a time when the author's health was declining. Although now considered a children's classic, she originally intended it to be read by those who worked with horses. She said a special aim was to "induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses".
