Why, given the tragedy in Venezuela, am I reissuing Beyond the Wall, a book I wrote in 2000 while living in Bogotá? The book, originally printed and distributed through a grant from the Puffin Foundation of New Jersey, is a weave of interrelated real stories about U.S. citizens incarcerated in Venezuelan prisons. Beyond the Wall emerged from a stack of folders two feet high, which I took with me when I left Caracas in 1995. But the four-year experience haunted me and would not let go. This re-issue is a powerful and gripping story about a woman of privilege putting herself at risk to help incarcerated North Americans in Venezuela. The second edition includes a new Foreword by the author addressing the fact that the prisoner's stories are more relevant than ever, given the present conditions in Venezuela. I am reissuing this book because I deeply believe that Venezuelan corruption has something to teach all of us.
