Ten-year-old
Arden thinks the world has ended when she has to leave the house where she grew
up to move to a tiny backyard guesthouse, built like a wooden boat. But things
get worse when her best friend moves away and a pandemic causes school to be
cancelled, leaving Arden's family quarantined and isolated in very little
space. Her mother and brother are always trying to start businesses, her father
is always trying to get her to do brave things, and Arden wishes people would
just leave her alone so her world could go back to normal. As their neighbors
leave town, shut down, and get sick, leaving their pets to care for, Arden
becomes the safe-keeper of all the abandoned animals. As the pandemic wears on
and touches home, Arden begins to see that saving animals is one thing--but does
she have the skills and courage to try to save her family? A fiction in verse
