After several years of disappointment, Isabel fails to conceive the baby she desperately wants. Adoption seems to be the answer, but when hope and joyful aspirations turn to failure and heartbreak, it is difficult not to resort to bitterness. Although the characters are fictitious, much of this novel is based on real events, and doubtless these problems are replicated all over the world to silent sufferers.
