After ALCATRAZ: surviving the escape

On June 11, 1962, three men tunneled out of their cells, gained access to the cell-block roof, lowered themselves to the ground, and made their way to the shore of the Alcatraz Island. Clinging to an improvised raft they slipped out into the dark waters of the bay. They were never seen again. Their escape resulted in one of the most extensive manhunts in history. The pundits agreed that they could not have survived the cold waters and strong tides of the San Francisco Bay.
