Let us return to the symptoms of AD(H)D and schizophrenia. The very same symptoms which can be found in AD(H)D - slight distractibility, lack of stimulus inhibition, system overflow as well as the visual inability to differentiate between foreground and background or between details, and more significant features, are also found in schizophrenia patients and their relatives. Even before the manifestation of acute illness, these symptoms could be identified in a thorough neuropsychological evaluation as subtle indicators of a genetic vulnerability in both patients and their relatives. These symptoms were referred to by S llwold as a basic functional disorder of the brain in schizophrenia patients. Even though a connection to AD(H)D was not established, these organic vulnerability factors of the brain, or basic dysfunctions, almost exactly correspond with those of AD(H)D.
