March 1684
Franklin James is left broken when his daughter, Evelyn, is snatched from their home in the dead of night by a gang of hooded figures. Amongst those enlisted to find her is Ewan Childs, Evelyn's unrequited love. Their search takes them to the darkest reaches of Wildermoor into the clutches of The Council of Eternal Light, a band of clergymen shunned by their community and new Parliament. Revenge is their desire; an ancient demon raised from the underworld, their charge.

After the failure to convict Colin Dexler, a man accused of a most brutal and motiveless murder, DI Truman Darke's career appears to have hit a wall. When Dexler kills again, this time choosing someone closer to Truman's heart, both of their lives are turned upside down. The added twist? Dexler believes that he is under the command of a hooded phantom known as The Reaper, urging him to kill in order to save his own life.
