Beskrivelse
When two innocent little girls fall into the hands of a sadistic serial murderer, they are rescued by a naive outdoorsman, who in an ironic turn of events is then mercilessly hunted down by a SWAT team in the rainforest of the Pacific Northwest. They are sent on this wild goose chase by an incompetent sheriff too lazy to find out what really happened, but all too eager to jump to false conclusions, fueled by his own preconceived notions of right and wrong. The injustice is further complicated by bumbling politicians quick to manipulate any opportunity to further their own self-serving agendas. The book then goes back in time to introduce each of the participants in this tragedy, following the actual life experiences of several young men in different cultures and situations. All then come together in the final climactic scene of violence. The criminal antagonists in this book are realistically depicted as depraved individuals whose criminal careers are abetted by an ineffectual justice system that negates the hard work of its own police forces. The book makes a strong argument for individual courage and existential decisions for self-defense, both against criminals and a justice system that fails its citizens while loudly claiming to "have its faults but still be the best in the world."
