Some pessimists among us think that the end of humanity is already written. They see the corrupting influence of unfettered capitalism pushing our governments, our institutions and life as we know it, relentlessly toward a grimly obvious abyss. For them, the questions of catastrophic global warming, nuclear war and societal collapse are now about when, not if. There are signs of this, of course. Who can ignore the extreme weather the planet is now experiencing, our new, seriously polarizing, narcissistic leaders like Putin and Trump still equating power with reason, and the ever mutating global pandemics that continue to threaten us all. However, I'm not convinced that our looming demise is already cast in stone. I think it is realistically possible to peacefully reorganize our existing institutions, including our governments, one committee at a time, one community at a time, so that their inherent power and the avarice they sometimes generate no longer fuel their blind ambition and our own self-destruction. This book is about one way it might happen.
