This second volume continues Hughes' magnificent portrayal of the history of the church. Here he picks up from where he left off at the end of Volume 1 as he concentrates on the West from the time of Constantine's conversion, when the the Church was beginning to make a world of its own. He continues the Church's history to the end of the thirteenth century, when the strong point of the Church was reached and a new secular order was already appearing.
