Recently widowed Opred Staal is a simple, well-respected woodcarver who, like all the people of the frozen, moonless lands of Adlbore, is completely devoted to the absolute certainty of duty and responsibility. He is devoted to responsibility, that is, until an astonishing revelation about the way his duty-bound world works forces him to undertake a perilous journey to save his son and, in so doing, save the world.
