"The Importance of Being Earnest" is, as its subtitle explains, "A Trivial Comedy for Serious People." The play was written by Oscar Wilde and first performed on February 14, 1895, at the St James's Theatre, London. In this farcical comedy, the protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escape their burdensome social obligations.
