Concussions are a part of ALL sports and it may shock you to know that a majority of concussions occur in equestrian events Polo, rodeos and horse jumping all involve very large and unpredictable animals that weigh thousands of pounds. This unpredictability leads to a variety of injuries from broken bones to even death In this special equestrian edition of Head Games: Concussions & CTE, Where Do We Go From Here?, the precautions that riders need to take are laid out. While equestrian events are elegant and beautiful, they can also be dangerous. Some of the precautions I cover include the different concussion assessment tools available, the importance of getting baseline assessments, protective gear, training young riders "how to fall" properly and ways to optimize your brain health through nutrition. This provides the rider with every layer of protection if an unfortunate fall takes place. We have to get the message out there that concussions are serious business and need to be treated as such.
