Early American Poetry

This collection surveys American poetry from the colonial period through the end of the nineteenth century, including eleven poets. Anne Bradstreet, Phillis Wheatley, Emily Dickinson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Philip Frenau, William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman are featured. Shows students how to analyze poetry for greater understanding and enjoyment. Includes biographical information, historical background, and several poems by each writer to introduce readers to a range of poems from this exciting era.
