In "Wolf Brand," the ordinarily peaceful River Junction community is divided into factions. The Midland and Southwestern Railroad brought in farmers to clear the land with the promise they could purchase the land for a dollar an acre. Now the railroad has changed the terms, asking $15 an acre and hiring men to evict the farmers if they don't pay. The ranchers are divided in their sympathies, some wanting the farmers evicted, and others believing the farmers are being cheated. The situation becomes explosive when two of the railroad marshals are shot.
