What does Christ look like to you?
The origin of this pictorial of Jesus Christ started with a poem about walking with Christ, which you can read in the Introduction of the book. The poem does not describe what Christ looked like, but I did have an image in my mind's eye of Jesus when writing it. I began to wonder what other people, like yourself, imagined what Christ's appearance was like when they thought of Him.
Of course, we have no photographs or drawings or art that shows us what His face and body resembled. But many artists of the past have done their best to represent Him. I began to seek out images of Christ by the classic artist of the past and eventually put together this book.
Each painting presented in this book reflects the societies and times in which they were painted. The models used for these paintings and drawings were patrons or people the artists knew. Yet, what I looked for in each selected artwork, went beyond the quality of the painting themselves and the looks of the models. I sought out those who captured the spiritual qualities of Christ. Spiritual qualities may be subjective, but I hope you will find them in this book of pictures as I have.
Some of the artists in this book may be familiar to you. Most, I suspect will not be, unless your are an art historian. Still, the images in this pictorial have gone through the test of time - which is a testament to the talents of the artists.
The artists included in this pictorial book are: Ernst Deger, Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Guido Reni, Julius Frank, Adriaen Isenbrandt, Albrecht Du¨rer, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, James Fuller Queen, Ivan Kramskoy, Titian, Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Nicholas Roerich, Julius Sergius Von Klever, Cornelis Engebrechtsz, Peter Paul Rubens, Giovanni Girolma Muziano, Andrea Vaccaro, Emile Bernard, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Follower of Ludolf Backhuysen, Albert Maignan, Maerten De Vos, Ambrosius Francken I, Heinrich Hofmann, Wilhelm Marstrand, James Tissot, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, E´douard Manet, Gustave Doré, Hieronymus Bosch, Odilon Redon, Caravaggio, Master of Saint Sang, Giampietrino, El Greco, Albert Edelfelt, Flemish School, Genoese School, School of Rogier van der Weyden, Juan Rodri´guez Jua´rez, Francesco Solimena, Alexander A.
