It is the first important metropolitan full-length novel in the history of German literature and a milestone in the history of modern fiction. Description of the novel: Franz accidentally killed his wife after a quarrel, so he was sentenced to four years' imprisonment. After being released from prison, he decided to mend his ways. He sold newspapers and small commodities in Alexanderplatz during the day and went to pubs to kill time at night. One day he met a young widow who received him warmly. Franz told his affair to a friend who was doing small business with him. However, the man went to the widow's house to steal things. Franz was so indignant at the man's despicable behavior that he stopped dealing with him. Soon after he met another man named Reinhold, who was gentle in appearance, but actually a hooligan who forced young girls of good families to prostitute themselves and head of a theft group. He repeatedly asked Franz to introduce girls that Franz was tired of to others but Franz rejected him. The hooligan hated him and baited him with money. Franz tried to get rid of his circle but was framed by Reinhold and broke his arm. After recovering, Franz went back to Alexanderplatz e to do business. After he met a prostitute Emily, they helped each other and got on well with each other. After Reinhold learned that, he deceived Emily to the forest, raped her and killed her. Franz became a suspected murderer...
